January 11, 2013 -- Illinois Warns Of Lengthy Delays In Issuing Medical Licenses. Modern Healthcare (1/11, Robeznieks, Subscription Publication) reports, "The state of Illinois has informed new and transferring doctors to expect delays in issuing their medical licenses and says it's all the Illinois State Medical Society's fault -- while the physicians' group argues that the state's improper use of cash collected from medical license fees is to blame." No matter "who is at fault, Manuel Flores, acting secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, said that his department's medical unit will lay off 69% of its staff -- going to eight employees from 26 -- effective Jan. 15." In a letter (pdf) to healthcare professionals, Flores explained that this action is "a result of the ISMS' successful lobbying effort against a state bill that would have allowed the IDFPR medical unit to borrow $9.6 million against future collections of licensing fees to avoid layoffs."

IAO's Public Service Programs
The Illinois Association of Ophthalmology has embarked on a major project in Vietnam with a focus in two primary areas: teaching phacoemulsification cataract surgery and working to improve medical and surgical eye care services in Quang Tri Province. Our partners for the cataract surgery course are Alcon and the Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology in Hanoi. For the Quang Tri effort, we are working closely with the Global Community Service Foundation. Read all about Project Vietnam and our video about our fundraising effort to build a facility to help the blind in the town of Vinh Linh.
The Vinh Linh building is complete and was dedicated on June 18, 2010, during a ceremony. The event was attended by two Illinois ophthalmologists, IAO's executive director, representatives of our partner, the Global Commity Service Foundation, and other friends and family.
