Increased Scrutiny for Cataract Surgery Audits
How Did We Get Here and How You Can Be Ready

ISEPS is pleased to announce the first in our LUNCHTIME WEBINARS which will focus on a variety of topics, including practice management, professional development, technology and more.  These webinars will be of interest to ophthalmologists, residents in training and ophthalmology practice staff.  Best of all, there's no cost to ISEPS members!

The webinars will start at 11:30 a.m. and will last 50 minutes or so.  We'll record them so you can view the presentation later if you're one of those workaholics who plow right through the lunch period.

Our first session on Tuesday, April 25 will address a critical and emerging topic:  Cataract Surgery Audits

Here's the planned agenda . . .

  • Increased scrutiny of cataract documentation ... how did we get here?
  • What auditors are looking for
    • Documentation requirements
    • Understanding the local coverage determination
    • Audit trail checklist
  • Important information about using split care modifiers and co-management
  • Performing an internal audit
  • Plus . . .
    • Learn more about it; questions & answers

Who Should Attend...

  • Anybody with responsibility for filing claims or documenting charts
  • Office managers and administrators
  • Insurance billing staff
  • Ophthalmologists (really!) or optometrists employed in an ophthalmology practice
  • Residents & Fellows in training -- Hey... you're going to need to know this stuff when you start practicing!

Some Background on the Topic

As one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States, cataract surgery is a prime target for public and private payers alike.  A recent audit by a Medicare Administrative Contractor yielded a 51% error rate for cataract surgery documentation.  Not surprisingly, this is eyed by Medicare and commercial carriers  and may serve as the basis for future cataract surgery prior authorization requirements.  Our aim with this webinar is to help ophthalmologists -- and their administrative staff -- to adopt audit-proof strategies and documentation protocols.

Webinar Format

Our Lunchtime Webinars are planned to become a standard offering of ISEPS, roughly every other month.  Practice Members -- both doctors and non-physician staff -- can attend at no charge... it's a member benefit!  The live sessions will be online via Zoom, and a recording of the session will be offered to members and their employees for viewing later.

When you register, you'll be signing up for a log-in, not how many individuals are attending.  The good news is that multiple people can view the workshop on one computer... but you'll be able to use each Zoom sign-in just once.  So, if you plan to sign-in to the webinar from multiple computers (or multiple locations), you'll need to register for each one.

IF YOU HAVEN'T ATTENDED A ZOOM OR A WEBINAR . . .   Watch this YOUTUBE VIDEO about joining a Zoom meeting for the first time.  We will be using the Zoom webinar format, but the steps presented are pretty much the same, the big difference being in a webinar, other attendees will not be able to see your camera image, and everybody is automatically muted unless you electronically raise your hand and we call on you.

Registration
The deadline to register is Monday, April 24 at 8 a.m.

"Late" registrations after 8 o'clock on 4/24 will still be able to receive the recording link.

"LIVE" SESSION -- ISEPS members & their employees

Send an email to:  [email protected] to sign up for the live session on Monday, April 25 at 11:30 a.m. (Central Time).  Be sure to include the practice name, the first and last name and a unique email address for each person you are registering.

Each registration will receive one link to the session.  So, if you are planning to log-in more than one computer (i.e., at multiple locations), you will need to have a registration for each webinar sign-in desired.

Important Information About the Registration Process

You will be signing up for a link to the ISEPS Lunchtime Webinar for April 25, 2023.  The Zoom webinar link is for use on one computer, and it will be unique to that user.  If you will need multiple links for multiple locations, or for multiple computers, you would need to register for additional links.   For all links (for the live or the recorded sessions) we need a separate email address where we will send the link.  DO NOT use the same email address for each of your registrations.
