Resident Ambassadors - 2015

The Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (ISEPS) is once again pleased to sponsor residents to attend the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Mid Year Forum (MYF) and Advocacy Day (April 15 - 18 in Washington, DC), as Resident Ambassadors.

If you would like to be considered as an applicant for the Resident Advocacy Ambassador Program, please submit an application by Friday, February 27th to Immediate Past President and Director of the ISEPS Young Ophthalmologist Program, Dr. Chris Albanis at [email protected].  The subject line of the email should read "Application for Resident Ambassador Program".

In the email, please answer the following questions:

  • Name
  • Training program
  • Year of ophthalmology training
  • Please complete the sentence or answer all of the following questions in 5 sentences or less for each:
    • I would like to attend the AAO MYF because:
    • During my journey, I hope to gain a greater understanding of:
    • What does advocacy mean to you?
    • Physicians should advocate for:
    • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) impacts several aspects of healthcare.  In your eyes, what is the most significant impact the ACA will/might have on physicians?
    • What top 3 things have you done in the last 12 months to advocate for our profession?

This is an outstanding opportunity for young physicians to learn more about how the political system shapes medicine and how organizations like ISEPS and the AAO work together to ensure that the best interests of physicians and our patients are represented at the federal and state levels.  To learn more, please visit: http://www.aao.org/meetings/myf/index.cfm

ISEPS is committed to educating residents regarding the importance of advocacy efforts and the "business of medicine".  To that end, we will sponsor your attendance to this meeting by covering a portion of your travel cost, up to $500.  The AAO will sponsor the registration fees for the meeting.  Please communicate with your program director and/or chair regarding your ability to take the time out of clinic to attend this program.  Even if you are not selected as a sponsored ambassador by ISEPS, I encourage you to attend this important meeting.

By applying for this opportunity, you are expected to attend all portions of the meeting, provide a report (written or in person) to the ISEPS board within one month of return from D.C. regarding lessons learned, educate your co-residents during an educational session within your program, and continue to advocate for the needs of our patients and our profession throughout residency (and beyond).

We look forward to receiving your application no later than Friday, February 27th.
